Norbulingka Park located in the western suburbs of Lhasa, lies 3km west of the Potala Palace, about one km (about 0.6 mile) southwest of Potala Palace.
Norbulingka Park was built in the 1740s during the reign of the 7th Dalai Lama. Later it was renovated and enlarged and became the Dalai Lama’s summer palace. Traditionally the Dalai Lama would leave the Potala Palace every spring, and spend the summer in Norbulingka. The Dalai Lama would handle political affairs and hold festival celebrations here.
Norbu Lingka, which means “jeweled garden,” is a fitting title for the large compound of buildings and extensive gardens. Almost half the park`s 3.6 sq km is covered with forest. The main buildings are the Golden Palace, Sutra Hall and the New Palace, which was built in 1954.
Compared with other famous attractions in Lhasa, Norbulingka is a little bit different. Without noise and stream of people, what you can experience here is the atmosphere of peace, leisure and tranquility. There are less people in Norbulingka.
