The Great Mosque, located in the center of the city, is the largest and one of the most important Islamic places of worship in China.
The Great Mosque was established in 742AD in the Tang Dynasty, giving it more than 1,200 years of history. After renovations and expansions in the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, it gradually developed into the present compact, solemn and harmonious complex of towers and pavilions.
Covering some 13,000 square meters, the Great Mosque of Xi’an comprises four main courtyards of typical traditional Chinese arrangement, which vividly distinguishes from most Islamic mosques and made it on the list of Islamic Cultural Relics by the UNESCO.
